Subnets and IP Addressing

In Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Subnets are subdivisions within a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network. Each subnet is region-specific and defines a range of IP addresses used for hosting resources like virtual machines (VMs), containers, and other services. A single VPC can have multiple subnets spread across different regions, allowing global connectivity.

Subnets can be created in auto mode or custom mode:

In auto mode, GCP automatically creates one subnet per region with predefined IP ranges.

In custom mode, you define your own subnet IP ranges, offering more flexibility and control.

Each subnet is associated with a CIDR block (e.g., 10.0.1.0/24), which determines the number of IP addresses it can allocate. These IPs can be:

Internal IPs: Used for communication within the VPC.

External IPs: Assigned to resources for internet access.

GCP uses primary and secondary IP ranges:

Primary range: For VM and resource IPs.

Secondary range: Often used by Kubernetes Engine (GKE) for pods and services.

GCP also supports Private Google Access, allowing instances without external IPs to reach Google APIs securely.

Subnet-level firewall rules and routing tables determine how traffic flows and is filtered. Subnet IP ranges must not overlap with other subnets in the same VPC.

In short, subnets and IP addressing in GCP allow precise control over resource placement, traffic routing, and network isolation across global infrastructure.
