EBS – Volumes & Snapshots

EBS (Elastic Block Store) is a block storage service provided by AWS. It is used with EC2 instances to store data like a hard disk. EBS volumes are durable, high-performance, and support both SSD and HDD options.

🔹 EBS Volumes:

They are like virtual hard drives attached to EC2 instances.

Can be used for storing OS, databases, logs, and files.

Volumes are persistent, meaning data remains even after the instance is stopped or terminated (if volume is not deleted).

You can choose from different volume types like gp3 (General Purpose SSD), io2 (Provisioned IOPS SSD), and st1 (Throughput HDD) depending on performance needs.

Features:

Can resize volume size and IOPS without downtime.

Can attach to one instance at a time (except for multi-attach with io2).

Supports encryption at rest.

🔹 EBS Snapshots:

A Snapshot is a backup of an EBS volume stored in Amazon S3.

It captures data at a point in time and can be used to restore or clone volumes.

Snapshots are incremental – only changes since the last snapshot are saved.

You can create new volumes from snapshots in any availability zone.

Use Cases:

Backing up critical data

Creating golden images of pre-configured environments

Migrating volumes across regions

Conclusion:

EBS Volumes provide fast, reliable storage for EC2, while Snapshots offer backup and recovery solutions. Together, they ensure data durability and disaster recovery in AWS.
